Hi All, Sorry for the late sum. Thankyou again to those who responded. While waiting for responses we had a loan of a Tektronix 850 for a week. We printed a number of different documents from maps, reports, duplexed pages, images, satellite pictures and a few other in-house items on it. We printed from both NT and Unix. Were impressed by its quality, free black is a bonus, reasonably fast for our needs, duplexing a plus, easy to clear any jams that may occur, accounting software that comes with it will help track costs and bill accordingly (reduced cost to users), little unsure about how much ink is used during power cycle startup. Overall, we were pretty pleased and have decided to purchase one. Responses: 1) I currently use a Tektronix Phaser 560 and was set to upgrade to the 850 until my hardware person talked to me. The cost of the consumable media and support were pretty costly on a yearly basis. I ended up going with the HP4550 Color Printer and am pretty happy with the quality. Bottomline, both printers offer excellent output but the service costs and consumable costs pushed me towards the HP line. Pete Noy 2) We have been using a Tek 850 for several months now with both AI and AV and we have had no problems. We have been using various Tek printers over the last 7 years (480 di-sub, 540 and 550 laser, 350 and 360 solid ink) some of which I would not recommend. The 850 is faster and has a higher resolution than the 360 that it replaced. Overall it is fairly quit, but it does make an occasional whirling sound. Replacing ink and paper is easy and very clean. Cleaning and/or replacing the maintenance tray is much better on the 850 than on the earlier 350 and 360. Good luck in your decision. Steve Haymes 3) The Tektronix Phaser 850 is the best thing since bottled milk. We have 2 of them and love the output from both Arcview 3.2& 8.2 and ArcInfo 8.2. The only downside we have found is that the ink is really a wax and it is hard to write on for edits etc. Regards Brian Andrews 4) Our office if using the Tektronix Phaser 780 and ArcView 3.2. We are able to print aerial's with no problems. Never any memory problems. Can scale poster size boards down to tabloid with no problems. Only issues involve sorting large documents and the enclosed manual for the printer is limited. Thanks, Michael Crino 5) We use the Tektronix Phaser 840 color printer. It only does 8.5 x 11, but it is fantastic! We love it, and have used it for a few years now. It does double sided printing, it's network ready, and the color is fantastic. And free black ink for the life of the printer! Nice with ArcView or Arc/Info David J. Streb 6) Not the 850, but we do have a Phaser 790 and it is awesome. Works great with ArcInfo 8.0.2 on NT, and ArcView 3.2a on NT/95. Haven't tried it on UNIX yet. Michael R Smith 7) I have been using the Tektronix Phaser 850 for printing maps from ArcView for the past year and the quality has been great. We use card stock, transparencies, and 24 lb paper (Weyerhaeuser First Choice) for optimal results. The only problem is that we are limited to 8.5x11. Hope this helps! Carol Cody 8) I have had problems using arcPress with this printer. However, I suspect that problem is within ther printer setup. It is not fully supported by ESRI Tech support. Otherwise it seems like a great printer. Tim Harris 9) Not sure how it compares to the Tektronix 560 but it is pretty hard to get someone to come look at it compared to HP products. The print quality is ok, but it has to be cranked up to produce high quality maps which reduces the speed tremendously. The pages per minute drops below one to get a good color image of any type. If you don't use it for a few hours and want something quick, just print it and go take a break cause it'll be anywhere from 5 or 10 minutes. Like I said, not sure how all this compares to the style you asked but products tend to run pretty close together for the same company so I thought I'd lend my two cents. Brian Tomlinson 10) The St. Clair County Metropolitan Planning Commission has been using the Phaser 850 with both ArcView and ArcInfo and have been very satisfied. The County has several HP laser printers on the network and the Phaser has outperformed them all. The only problem has been printing from winpress. To achieve any modifications from the standard settings you must change the standard settings on the printer. Everything uses the default via eps printing and eps seemed to be the only way to communicate the map to the printer. The Phaser will work with ESRI Software but is not fully supported by their support staff. Tech Support has been helpful but we are all guessing when it comes to troubleshooting. Trevor Floyd 11) I am unisng phaser 850 N. this is absolutely fine except that it is not supporting arabic fonts. regards kumar 12) I have been using Tektronix printers for a number of years now - first the 840 and now the 850. Great printer with no downside concerning ArcView or ArcInfo. I would recommend that you get the DX model (I think that is the one), which adds a hard drive and greater paper capacity as well as print duplexing. The hard drive is nice, because it will absorb large files and print without a problem. Free black ink is a real bonus and the print quality is outstanding. Cheers, Bryan Hargrave Original Question: I need to cross post to both lists due to using both ArcView and ArcInfo. Would like to know if anyone is using Tektronix Phaser 850 for printing. Would like to know pros/cons of printer and problems if any with producing output from ArcView/ArcInfo. C.
